    This captured WWI German submarine was part of a traveling exhibit in 1919. It is docked in this image at the Thunder Bay Milling Company dock in the Thunder Bay River. A WWI tank was also on exhibit.

    Captain Phelps Collins was Alpena's World War I "Ace" and was among 203 American pilots who served in the Lafayette Escadrille in France. A fighter pilot who downed five or more enemy aircraft was designated an "Ace." Records credit Collins with downing seven German aircraft in air battles over France ...

    William Phelps Collins was a young pilot from Alpena who joined the Lafayette Escadrille before the United States entered World War I. He was killed in France in an aviation accident in March 1918.

    Edward Kositchek and Sons were dealers in buggies, wagons, robes, blankets, and oliver plows in the early 1900s. They were also manufacturers of harnesses, guns, ammunition, and sporting goods. Their store was located at 119 South Second Avenue.
