Known as the Dean of Alpena Businessmen, Adam Ludewig came to Alpena in 1871, and owned and operated a bookstore in various Alpena locations for over fifty years. He received many public honors including a life membership in the Elks Club. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for 71 years.
